The Austrian 8 Gulden / 20 Francs gold coin embodies the historical heritage of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Struck in gold with a fineness of 900/1000, it has a total weight of 6.45 grams, a fine gold content of 5.81 grams, and a diameter of 21 millimeters.

Introduced in 1870, the coin bears two denominations 8 Gulden and 20 Francs. Its weight and fineness were aligned with the standards of the Latin Monetary Union, founded in 1865 by France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. The Union standardized coin specifications to facilitate their use in international trade. Although Austria did not become an official member, it issued gold coins according to the same standards.

The obverse depicts Emperor Franz Joseph I, wearing a laurel wreath, surrounded by a Latin inscription meaning “Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God, Emperor and King.” The reverse features the crowned double-headed eagle bearing the imperial coat of arms, the inscription IMPERIVM AVSTRIACVM (“Austrian Empire”), the denominations, and the year 1892. The coin’s edge bears the motto VIRIBVS VNITIS (“With United Forces”).

Coins dated 1892 are official restrikes that retain the historical design and date of the original coin type. The date commemorates the year in which the Crown replaced the Gulden and does not necessarily indicate the actual year in which an individual coin was minted.
